During times of change, people often cling to the status quo, which manifests itself in an overly-cautious and wavering behavior. Early Roman literature was familiar with this phenomenon, calling those displaying this attitude “cunctators.” Before the coaching process commences and the coach can obtain the necessary means to meet the resistance, passivity, or half-heartedness of his or her clients, it takes a profound and comprehensive understanding of these behavioral patterns.

Looking at this in detail, the underlying causes can be quite plausibly explained but they are often hard to retrieve. Frequently, stances and views on particular issues change in the face of distress or danger. Or people who take pride in what they have accomplished become the obstacle to their own development. Also, employees tend to react with a lack of understanding or even hesitancy when they have been engaged at a very late point into something important or in cases where a proposed plan of change has been poorly communicated. Besides these work-related reasons, there are numerous private and personal causes or fears that need to be re-surfaced and taken into consideration.
